Caught up with an amazing leader, mentor and friend today. Major Evita Mosqueda active reservist and talked about leadership, transition and life.

“...we are in a people business and its the people that we have to work with....in a leadership position you have to tailor to that. ”

The common point that has come across these last interviews is that everything we do revolves around the people. It is a people business. We say it's "Mission Accomplishment and Troop Welfare," but the people will help us accomplish the mission in the Marine Corps. Balancing those key pillars is an ever-evolving process. If we as leaders can take care of our people, then our people will care for us.

Don't Bull S**T Your People!

Let us be honest; nobody likes someone to lie to them and vice-versa. People can sniff out the BS and then lose your people's trust. Losing trust is such a hard thing to reestablish with your team. If you genuinely care for your people, they will not only perform for you at a higher level but also build loyalty towards the organization and, more importantly, towards you! So cut the BS and be honest with your team because when the time comes to have those hard conversations, it will be easier to have, and they will understand that it came with the best intentions towards them.

Situation Will Dictate!!

Take the time to know your team personally, and being aware of a person's home life can make the difference between an employee "just" showing up to work. The most influential leader that I had growing up as a Marine was the one who knew about my wife, my kids, and me personally. Not because I took the time to let them know everything about myself outside of my roles and responsibilities as a Marine leader but because he remembered things on just simple light conversation.

How are you taking the extra time to learn about your people and the tribulations they encounter at home, and the triumphs they are experiencing? This small investment will have a considerable return in the end.

Saved Rounds

Here it is, saved rounds!!

Well...... the message is the same! (I'll put it in caps, so it stands out) IT IS A PEOPLE-PERSON BUSINESS!!!! If we look at it in the business context. The people are the most crucial resource we have... the human capital! A leader without people, well, they are not a leader, and they are just alone. Don't be a loner.

Watch the video! You might learn something new!

Semper,

Aaron
