Lets talk leadership! Master Gunnery Sergeant John Abbracimento (retired) and I caught up on a great discussion about leading Marines and leading outside of the Marine Corps.
"... can you communicate to another human being, we don't necessary have to agree on this, but you have to be willing to convince that person... give it a try."
We hear a lot of these things called "soft skills." I didn't understand what it meant until I served on Parris Island at Drill Instructor School on Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. I was a squad instructor for a group of young leaders going through Drill Instructor school in 2015. I had a young sergeant with personal issues and had confided with another instructor about her problems. I felt betrayed that she would not have come to me and let me "fix" her problems. She said something to me that forever changed my life. She said that I was unapproachable and, she stopped me dead in my tracks. I did not know what to say other than I am sorry. I had allowed the position to be more important than the welfare of my team. My failure to properly communicate with my team became a barrier between them. That helped change my entire approach to communication. I went forward and worked on communicating with every Marine that I encountered, no matter their rank. I listened and communicated in the same manner to a general as I did with a private. Everyone was at the same level of importance, and I did not show a difference.
Saved Rounds
Here it is, saved rounds!!
1 - Hydration is key!!
2 - If your form of communication changes when you speak with your supervisor to the newest person on your team. Then we need to work on that. Give every person the same level of attention no matter how significant their role is in the organization!
Watch the video; you might learn something new!
Semper,
Aaron
